The illustration above depicts a complete file-based Digital Intermediate (DI) workflow utilizing the Lasergraphics Director film scanner, the Producer 4 film recorder, and Assimilate's SCRATCH Digital Process Solution workstation.

The Director film scanner can output multiple simultaneous DPX & QuickTime image file streams at over 11 frames per second.  However, a high-performance storage sub-system is required to keep the scanner operating at full speed.  The workstation and the scanner are typically connected to the high-performance storage sub-system via a Fibre Channel-based Storage Area Network (SAN).  These FC-based SANs work well but are expensive, especially for small installations where only a single workstation is used for the conform and grading operations.

The SCRATCH workstation contains an internal high speed, high capacity (e.g. 24 TB) RAID storage sub-system.  The Director film scanner is connected directly to the SCRATCH workstation via point-to-point 10Gb Ethernet.  The Producer 4 film recorder is connected directly to the SCRATCH workstation via standard Gb Ethernet.

As a result of close vendor cooperation, it is now possible for the Director film scanner to send image files directly into the workstation's internal RAID at full scanning speed, so that creative work can begin immediately, without unnecessary and time consuming copy operations, and without the need for an expensive FC-based SAN.

This proven single-workstation configuration dramatically lowers overall system costs and improves efficiency while still allowing for future expandability.  For more information about the SCRATCH Digital Process Solution visit Assimilate.
